Young voters matter. For several decades, young voters have failed to make it to the ballot box, but 2020 is on target to bring a change for this growing section of the voting population.
According to Census data gathered by the Brookings Institution, “Millennials and some members of Gen Z comprise 37% of eligible voters, roughly the same share of the electorate that baby boomers and pre-boomers make up.”
NPR asks, “Will 2020 be the year of the Young Voter?”
Voting is often the first opportunity for young people to engage with civic responsibility in their lives, and New Mexico PIRG (Public Interest Research Group) seeks to help get students from CNM, UNM and NMSU registered— no matter what choice they make at the polls.
On National Voter Registration Day, September 22, at 5 p.m. MST, PIRG will launch their Civic Engagement Series, featuring a variety of speakers who will address the concerns students may have about voting, while encouraging them to take part in the political process. All students are welcome.
The event will occur online. For more information fill out this simple form.
