NMDOH Youth Engagement Vaccine Outreach

CNM supports the New Mexico Department of Health’s (NMDOH) efforts to raise COVID-19 awareness and vaccinations throughout the state. With that in mind, CNM would like to share how you can help NMDOH’s efforts in making the state a safer place.

You can complete a survey regarding vaccine hesitancy. The information provided is intended for program evaluation and improvement at the New Mexico Department of Health.

Be Aware: Phishing Campaigns Targeting Students with Pandemic Relief Funds

While CNM may be offering special federal funding to some students, there are phishing emails being sent regarding COVID/Pandemic Relief Funding and Pell Pandemic Grants, which appear to come from an individual at CNM. How can you tell if the email you receive is legitimate?

  • The email will come from [email protected]; never from an individual’s email
  • Emails sent from CNM and pertaining to special federal funding will never ask for sensitive information such as social security numbers, passwords, etc.
  • CNM will never ask you to print a check

Reminders: 

  • When in doubt, verify with the sender using a trusted phone number. 
  • Remember your personal information has value, protect it! Never provide personal/sensitive information over email or other forms of electronic messaging, or in response to unsolicited phone calls. 
  • A common scam tactic is to lure victims with tempting offers/promises. If it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is! Similarly, a sense of urgency is often used by scammers to dissuade deliberation and impel victims to take the desired action(s).
  • Most professional communications contain complete sender contact details.

Emergency Rental Assistance

CNM supports households that have fallen on hard times since the COVID-19 pandemic began. With that in mind, CNM would like to direct you to the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP).

The ERAP makes $170 million available to assist households that are unable to pay rent and utilities due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Eligible households may receive up to 15 months of assistance, plus an additional 3 months if the extra months are needed to ensure housing stability and funds are available. Priority will be placed on paying past due rent and utilities before any assistance is provided for current and future rent and utility payments.

Applications may be submitted online by either an eligible household or by a landlord on behalf of that eligible household. In general, funds will be paid directly to landlords and utility service providers. Visit this link to learn more and apply today.

In this video, watch CNM student Tiana Valdez discuss what a water footprint is, why we should care and how we can make changes to better our day-to-day water usage. She walks us through the Food, Energy and Water (FEW) Nexus and how each one relates to our personal water footprint and consumption. Creative ways to save water are discussed and shown, and several different items are highlighted.

COVID-19 Forum: The Way Forward

CNM and UNM will be sponsoring an open forum to discuss innovative models for New Mexico businesses, moving forward past COVID-19. Local, state, federal and global officials working in economic development will be on hand to discuss support for New Mexico entrepreneurs. February: American Heart Month

February is Heart Month. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States and is a major cause of disability. About 630,000 people die of heart disease in the U.S. every year – that’s one in every four deaths. And every year, about 790,000 Americans have a heart attack.

Statistics

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

  • Cardiovascular diseases claimed 630,000 lives in 2016 – 25 percent of all deaths in the U.S.
  • Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women.
  • Coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease, killing more than 366,000 people annually.
  • Heart disease costs the United States about $200 billion each year. This total includes the cost of health care services, medications and lost productivity.

Risk Factors

Some conditions, as well as some lifestyle factors, can put people at a higher risk for developing heart disease. All persons can take steps to lower their risk of heart disease and heart attack by addressing the following risk factors:

  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Tobacco use
  • Diet
  • Physical inactivity
  • Obesity
  • Alcohol

Treatment and Prevention

Fortunately, most people can treat heart disease with proper diet and lifestyle changes:

  • Early prevention: Have your blood pressure and cholesterol checked regularly. Your doctor can provide suggestions to help you manage your health.
  • Regular exercise: Even mild to moderate physical activity can lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease.
  • Proper diet: A healthy diet can lower blood pressure and reduce cholesterol levels. Eat a high-fiber, low-sodium and low-fat diet that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains and nuts and contains reduced amounts of red meat and eggs.
  • Drink alcohol only in moderation: Adults should consume no more than one to two alcoholic drinks a day to reduce the risk of heart disease.
  • Quit smoking: Tobacco use has been proven to be a major contributing factor of cardiovascular disease. It is estimated that smokers’ risk of heart attacks is more than twice the risk for non-smokers.
